BTA
Botulinum toxin is used as a neuro-modurator which causes neuromuscular blocking effects. When muscles are supposed to contract when required and relax when not. Some muscles are persistently tensed up due to persistent stress. Overly tensed muscles need to relax. Used in a correct way, botulinum toxin helps to relax these tensed muscle which is responsible for dynamic wrinkles. Today, its use has been expanded to create non-surgical lift (by relaxing muscles that pulls the skin down) and to reduce the size of overly hyperactive muscles.
Botulinum toxin is produced by a gram positive anaerobic bacterium. It can be broken into 7 neurotoxins (A,B,C,D,E,F,G) with each of them possessing individual potency. This toxin is widely used in the medical field. The products approved by FDA are as follows
1. Onabotulinumtoxin A
2. Abobotulinumtoxin A
3. Incobotulinumtoxin A
4. Rimabotulinumtoxin B
In Malaysia only two products of Botulinum toxin A are officially registered with the Ministry of Health namely Onabotulinumtoxin A and Abobotulinumtoxin A. Other BTAs such as Incobotulinumtoxin A and Rimabotulinumtoxin B are still not registered with the authorities in Malaysia.
BTA can be used in a wide variety of ways. Amongst others are:
1. Wrinkles Reduction : Forehead, Glabella, Crow’s feet, Chin
2. Muscle size reduction: Facial reshaping (Masseter muscle size reduction), Calf muscle reshaping (Calf muscle size reduction)
3. Treatment of Hyperhidrosis : Axillary, Palms
4. MesoBotox
5. Non surgical lift – The Korean Trendy Lift
